114 Million Kilombo dam launched in Kilome

Governor Kivutha Kibwana and Cabinet Administrative Secretary for Agriculture Anne Nyaga on Tuesday flagged off construction works for the rehabilitation of Kilombo earth dam in Kiu/Kalanzoni ward, Kilome sub county.

The 300,942 cubic meters water capacity dam (300.9 million litres) is expected to be complete within six months from the date of launch, and will cost

Sh114 million.

The project is funded by the World Bank through the National Agricultural and Rural Inclusive Growth Project (NARIGP).

Besides the dam, other components of the project include:

  1. Road runoff water harvesting covering the construction of 20 farm ponds of 500,000 litres of water to support irrigation initiatives at the upper side of dam.
  2. Agroforestry, reforestation and grass reseeding initiative to restore the environment. So far, 5, 240 agro forestry trees have been planted and a further 4,500 fruit trees including mangoes, avocado and macadamia planted.,
  3. Terracing activities covering 66,788 meters of terraces. The activity continues
  4. Gulley control and healing initiatives where 252 gabions have been constructed.
